Since my obsession with lipstick started last fall, I’ve fallen for a few more colors and taken my bright lip look from night to day, from Friday to Monday, and from dinner to brunch. It’s changed my everyday makeup entirely.
Manhunt by NARS is my summer color.
I’ve always been in the less-is-more camp (okay, okay, other than that brief stint with too much black eyeliner in eighth grade), so I was hesitant to make a bright lip my signature. But I’ve found that it makes for a much simpler makeup routine — just a bit of powder, a swipe of blush, and a few blinks of mascara is all I wear with lipstick — and it makes me feel put-together and trendy at the same time. My summer color is Manhunt by Nars. It’s part of their sheer lipstick line, which is vibrant, has a bit of shine, and feels like lip balm — a positively pulchritudinous combination in the lipstick department. So overall, lipstick has simplified my beauty routine.
The one thing I’ve added to my beauty practice since adding bright lipstick to my daily wears? A good scrubbing of my lips every few weeks. The goal of a bright lip is to add a bit of playful sophistication to my look, not draw attention to a lip balm shortage.
To give your lips a proper scrubbing, measure a equal parts olive oil (or any other rich oil for that matter — avocado, grapeseed, whatever you have around) and course sugar (or sea salt, though sugar will taste better if/when it gets in your mouth). Mix with your finger before spreading on wet lips. Massage around for a good minute, before rinsing with a bit of face wash. Pat dry and apply moisturizing lip balm. I like Carmex and the simple lip balm from Marble and Milkweed. Leftovers of the scrub can be saved, or make a smaller batch for one-time use.
And, while we’re on the subject, my favorite lipsticks? I’m a NARS girl. Helping fuel my addiction is a NARS store strategically placed in between my yoga studio and my favorite brunch spot and along my running route, which is one reason why I keep buying NARS. They also just have the best colors.
